Successful Commissioning of Improved Groundwater Treatment Solution

GPT recently completed a project to design, manufacture, and install a passive groundwater treatment system to remediate hydrocarbon impacted groundwater at a site where contaminated groundwater was either daylighting and/or draining to a stormwater outlet.

GPT recently completed a project to design, manufacture, and install a passive groundwater treatment system to remediate hydrocarbon impacted groundwater at a site where contaminated groundwater was either daylighting and/or draining to a stormwater outlet. The groundwater resulted in a negative aesthetic impact in the downstream ambient environment and water discharge quality.

The passive treatment system was designed to intercept groundwater flow from the shallow subsurface before being reticulated towards a common outlet; whereby unwanted hydrocarbon vapours were previously being observed. The system comprised building two separate sumps and installing a bespoke separator housing multiple granular activated carbon (GAC) cartridges, designed to filter out the dissolved hydrocarbons from the groundwater before its release. The system specification catered to the measured varying flow volumes that change between dry and wet seasons based on rainfall in the area to minimise the need to replace each cartridge while also ensuring continuous flow.

Before and after water samples were collected to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system at construction sign-off, with no hydrocarbon odours detected in the ambient air following system commissioning. This system creates a passive treatment system to replace a previously installed mechanical system; thus improving the sustainability and up-time of the treatment solution for this site looking into the future.
